I find creating location functionality fun whether it is a listing system or simply identifying a user location. Many complex and interesting functionalities are possible.
A listing search system based on geographic location, proximity and category. These listings initially cover North America but eventually will cover the globe. Users enter either a city / state combination or a zipcode, select a distance and a category (optional). The resulting listings have addresses that lie within the selected distance from the selected location that belong to the selected category.
Create a site for Users to post and discover destinations in the US and elsewhere.
Created multiple page views for the front page and destination pages and search and location map functionality for destinations. Set up google maps, facted search, and other modules. Set up category system for managed display of content.
